Theni is on the Kochi-Madurai national highway (NH 49) that connects Kochi, the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’, on the west coast of Kerala with Madurai, the ‘Athens of the East’, the Temple city on the plains of Tamilnadu, crossing on its way the high green obstacle of the Western Ghats. It is also situated on the Madurai-Bodinayakkanur railroad. |
There are 8 well-visited temples, a famous church and major mosque in the district. There are 7 branches of nationalised banks, besides several scheduled banks and co-operative banks catering to the financial exigencies of the public. There is a strong network of post & telegraph offices and the whole area has a comfortable density of telephone and mobile services. |
Theni has got a medical college, an engineering college, several other institutions of higher and technical education, besides a number of high schools. It has also got a well knit governmental health care system with primary health centres and hospitals. Sri Aurobindo eye hospital attracts patients from as far as the nearby state of Kerala. There are many private hospitals frequented by patients from all over the district. |
