Theni
Theni municipal town is the district head quarters of Theni district and is aptly situated in the dead centre of an almost rectangular area that forms the district with Kerala State on the east, Dindigul district on the north, Madurai district on the west and Kerala State and Virudunagar district on the south. From an insignificant firka head quarters, it was upgraded as the taluk and district head quarters on 01-01-1997.
It is a thriving commercial centre of trade and industry, with cotton mills and farm related commercial activity. It is known for its weekly market on every Sunday which brings the rural populace from all around the city for buying and selling mainly agrarian produces. Theni is well connected by roads and rail to all the major cities of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is equidistant from the hill resort of Munnar and the Periyar wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and the hill station Kodaikanal.
The climate of Theni is warm, but not hot, by south Indian standards. It never touches 40oC and never goes below 25oC. Though Theni is only 100 metres above sea level, the Western Ghat ranges, which runs close along the border with Kerala and shelters Theni on all three sides, is able to cool the evenings and several rivers and lakes around the town contribute their bits.
